SEVEN SISTERS HAIR GROWER:

Billed as the "Seven Wonders" in the 1880's, the seven Sutherland sisters had a combined hair length of over 37 feet. Their father, The Rev. Fletcher Sutherland, exploited them and made millions by signing the girls as a sideshow act with P.T. Barnum and concocting a useless tincture comprised of quinine, bay rum, salt and rose water.

SALVATION OIL:

Manufactured in Baltimore, Maryland in the 1880's this quasi-religious remedy claimed to cure toothaches, headaches, frosted feet, chapped hands and face, cuts, burns, sprains, bruises, bites and stings of poisonous insects, weak limbs, neuralgia, and rheumatic pains. It contents were merely sulfur and ether.

KEELEY CURE FOR THE TOBACCO HABIT:

From 1892 to 1900, Dr. Leslie E. Keeley marketed his "Gold Cure" for quiting smoking. It was discovered that the mixture contained no gold, but contained powerful and potentially harmful drugs including, according to various analyses, strychnine, atropine, cocaine, codeine, and apomorphine. Among the data cited was a report of 88 cases of insanity, allegedly the results of taking the Keeley remedy.
